goodtogo - Carluccio's comes to Leeds

4-5 Greek Street, Leeds, LS1 5SX

The launch party on 12th May 2011 confirmed the rumours that Carluccio’s is as classy an operation as its position on Greek Street in Leeds city centre implies.

On arrival efficient and friendly serving staff provided Proseccio top ups and a selection of Italian canapes including char grilled veg on bruscheta and king prawns wrapped in Parma ham. This was not a sit down affair, more a meeting and mingling opportunity. There was a boisterous accordion player sashaying through the throng which added to the jovial atmosphere, apparently a friend of Antonio Carluccio himself. It was quite a warm evening and the front of the premises opened up on to the street under a canopy. It’s easy to see how this nice touch will add to the continental ambience here.

After the canapes bowls of steaming four mushroom risotto were produced, nicely laden with parmesan. The texture was beautifully nutty and the mushrooms supplied a pleasing diversity of flavour and feel enhanced by the deep taste of wine. This wonderful dish is on the restaurant menu. Finally deliciously sweet and crisp minature fruit and cream tarts finished off a pleasing introduction to Carluccio’s cuisine.

Paschalis Loucaides, the Head of Marketing, informed me that the ingredients on sale in the attached shop and deli are all used in the restaurant kitchen and that Antonio Carluccio is very much a hands on proprietor. What stands out from the menu are the reasonably priced breakfast offerings and the picnic hampers. Also on the a la carte two courses can be purchased for as little as £15. These along with the on- site retail outlet are the factors that will undoubtedly make this Italian stand out from the crowd.
