Leeds things to do - 'Appy Feet' at The Light, Leeds NOW OPEN

Garra Rufa fish pedicure comes to Leeds
Garra Rufa fish spa (pedicure)

What is a Garra Rufa fish spa?

This treatment is a natural pedicure originating from Turkey and practised all over the Far East. This unique skin treatment massages your feet using Garra Rufa fish.

The story goes that a pair of brothers came upon a hot spring in Kangal, near Turkey and dipped their feet in to relax when a shoal of the fish came to massage their feet. This led to the notion that these fish had special healing properties which in a way they do: What happens is that the fish release an enzyme called diathanol in their saliva, this re-generates the dead skin removed by the fishes’ sucking action, and your feet are left beautifully smooth. The fish get a good meal out of it as well!

Additional benefits

These clever fish can also stimulate acupuncture points, helping to regulate the nervous system, relax the body and release fatigue. Your blood circulation and flow is also greatly increased during the treatment.

What does it feel like?

You will feel a light tingling sensation and enjoy a relaxing foot massage. It may be very slightly ticklish to start with.

Does it hurt?

No! The fish have no teeth so the treatment works by them gently sucking away at the dry skin, which is a lovely experience!

Is it safe?
Absolutely! You will pre-rinse your feet before the treatment and have your own dedicated foot bath. There is also a state of the art filtration system at work in each foot spa. Additionally the water is sterilized a minimum of 5 times an hour. Garra Rufa fish cannot pass on any disease to humans.

How much does it cost?

This treatment is very reasonably priced, starting at just £10. You don't have to book, just turn up and wait. See website for more details.
